KatG has both catalase and broad-spectrum peroxidase activities. With AhpCF, KatG protects aerobic, phosphate-starved cells from oxidative damage. N-terminus is reportedly blocked (Triggs-Raine et al, 1988.) Binds TrxA (Kumar, 2004). KatG is a tellurite reductase (Calderon, 2006). Overexpression of YchF causes hydrogen peroxide hypersensitivity probably due to direct binding and inhibition of the catalase-peroxidase KatG by YchF, dependent on the ATPase activity of YchF and regulated by the YchF phosphorylation state at Ser16; ychF transcription is repressed by OxyR (Wenk, 2012).
